All classes will be presented starting at 2:00 PM Mountain Time and will last from 1 1/2 to 2 hours. The sessions cost $30 each. Payment is due three business days prior to the class. We currently accept Discover, Visa, and MasterCard credit cards. We will be accepting PayPay in the near future.
Introduction to XML
This session covers the basic XML tools and technologies. We will look at the basic parts of an XML document and how to make sure that it meets the requirements to be read properly by XML processing programs. We will look validating the content of a simple XML document using a schema and how schemas can be used to determine the validity of XML documents you may receive from others before you try to process the document. Documents can be processed programmatically and with a transformation language. We will look at both those techniques. Prerequisites: None
Introduction to XML Schema
This session will cover the purpose and implementation of an XML Schema which can be used to validate an XML document. The validation process can be used to make sure the data is of the right type, format and presented in the proper sequence. Some limited enumerations can be checked also. The validation can be a process to check the data prior to it being read into a production process. Schemas are a key technology in the use of XML documents. Prerequisites: Introduction to XML
Introduction to XML Transformations
This session will cover the use of the XML transformation language and process to convert an XML document to another XML document or HTML document. The transformation technology is normally uses to convert documents from one format to another. As you get more input documents from various sources they will need some reformatting to be input into your standard business processes. Another major use is the conversion of XML data content into a HTML page. This can be done in the browser or at the server. In the past a major part of the work required to move data around was the conversion of that data. This functionality is done with Transformations when using XML Documents. Prerequisites: Introduction to XML
Introduction to Processing XML Documents Programmatically
This session will cover the use of programming languages to processes XML Documents. The programming languages covered will be VBA, VB6 and VB .NET. These technologies are used to read or write XML documents from your applications as well as to conversions that cannot be done by the Transformation Language. Prerequisites: Introduction of XML and Basic Visual Basic Programming Skills
Introduction to Retrieving Data from SQL Express in XML
This session will cover the use of the ‘AS XML’ Clause in the SQL Language. The result of a SQL Select statement can be returned as an XML document that could be sent to other programs for processing, returned to the browser for transformation into HTML. Prerequisites: Introduction to XML and Knowledge of SQL Select Statements
Using XML Documents with InfoPath
This session will cover the use of XML Documents with InfoPath. We will talk mostly about using InfoPath to capture data in an XML Document. To do this some of the InfoPath features will be covered as the standard output for information in InfoPath is an XML Document. This session applies to InfoPath 2003 and 2007. Prerequisites: Introduction to XML
Using XML Documents with Word
This session will cover the use of an XML Document behind data collection using Word or Reporting using Word. The data that can be entered or reported in a Word document can be stored in and XML document. This XML document can be forwarded to a application program, or the program can create the XML document to be displayed using Excel. This session applies to Word 2003 and 2007. Prerequisites: Introduction to XML
Using XML Documents with Excel
This session will cover the use of an XML Document behind data collection using Excel or Reporting using Excel. The data that can be entered or reported in an Excel document can be stored in an XML document. This XML document can be forwarded to an application program, or the program can create the XML document to be displayed using Excel. This session applies to Excel 2003 and 2007. Prerequisites: Introduction to XML
Using XML Documents with Access
This session will cover the use of an XML Document for input or output from Access. Access is about data and XML is all about moving data around. It is natural that Access data tables, queries and reports can be presented in XML format. Also XML documents can be imported into Access tables. This session applies to Access 2003 and 2007. Prerequisites: Introduction to XML
Understanding the Word and Excel 2007 File formats
This session will cover the new file format for both Word and Excel. Because the new file format is really a group of XML files ZIPed into the file you see stored the pieces of a Word or Excel document are readily available for processing and modification. This session applies only to 2007. Prerequisites: Introduction to XML
Programming is Easy
This session will cover the basics of programming for the power users that up to this point have only created processes and functions using Macros in Word or Excel. Programming can be very complex, but also has variations of complexity. Creating functions and macro like processes can be very easy. This session will cover programming at that level. Prerequisites: None
VB.NET Programming for VBA and VB 6 Programmers
This session will cover the implementation of the commonly used VBA and VB 6 processes in VB.NET. We will not concern ourselves with the bigger picture which is very powerful but not material with getting the job done using VB.NET. When we are done you will be able to do the same things you did with VBA or VB 6 using VB.NET. Although we will be using Visual Studio Express, what we do will also apply to other versions of Visual Studio .NET including Visual Studio Tools for Office. Prerequisites: Experience with VBA or VB 6
